After failed promises by their government - for roads, schools, and better healthcare - hundreds of villagers from Seis de Mayo and surrounding communities took machetes and matters into their own hands. They began a massive protest that lasted 38 hours; our tour bus became an unfortunate part of their strategic roadblock that ensnared traffic for miles. They waited for promises. We waited for freedom. As nightfall came - so did the kindness of strangers - we were able to abandon our bus for the haven of a local family's backyard. They welcomed us into their home and provided us with food and shelter. I slept upon the cold, rocky earth by the backdoor - using my backpack as a pillow - listening to the demonstrators scream their frustrations until dawn.
